I don't recall exactly when mother and I moved in with her mom, my grandmother, Sarah Adeline Howell Holland in her Rockmart Housing Authority apartment. It had to be sometime between 5th and 6th grades. Granny was getting older and needed someone to look after her. She would have been around 79 or 80 when we moved in.
She was the sweetest thing. I remember her playing with me and cutting up. At bedtime she would chase me around the bed and say the wibberts were gonna get me. Years later she revealed to me the wibberts were her invention. If I ever went to spend the night with a friend, granny would say, " I wish you wouldn't go it's so lonesome without you here." Of course, she was always glad to see me get back home. I would get a big hug and kiss right on the lips.
I loved watching TV with granny. She always got into the shows. Like when a couple would kiss she would say, eww they are swapping slobber. I said granny didn't you kiss Papa and she would say not till after we married but not many times. She was a mess. I wonder where she got her sense of humor. Her and her sister, my great aunt Mollie had to get it from their mom or dad.
Granny's favorite Christian hymn was, "I'll fly away" and it's one of mine because of her. So many sweet memories with my granny. She would watch wrestling with me and get so excited. She would talk to wrestler no. 2 and holler and sit on edge of her rocking chair. I loved it when she would fall asleep and her hearing aids would be beeping and she just snored away but when she woke up if I asked her how was her nap? She would say, "I wasn't asleep, I was just resting my eyes." That was the funniest thing to me.
These things bring back some awesome images of my sweet granny Holland: mauve lipstick, a beauty mark on her lip, the pretty red hair, the many beautiful pins she wore, her money bag she pinned to her slip, her sweater and aprons she wore, and most of all her sweet presence.
